Common Causes of Frost Inside a Refrigerator

Here are the most frequent reasons your fridge might be building up frost:

• Faulty Door Seal (Gasket): If the door doesn’t seal properly, warm, moist air gets inside - leading to frost buildup.

• Broken Defrost Heater or Thermostat: These components keep frost from accumulating. If they fail, ice will collect on evaporator coils and inside the fridge.

• Clogged or Frozen Defrost Drain: When the drain is blocked, water from the defrost cycle can freeze inside the unit.

• Frequent Door Openings or Long Open Times: Letting warm air in repeatedly increases condensation and frost.

• Malfunctioning Defrost Timer or Control Board: These parts regulate the automatic defrost cycle. If they stop working, frost will build up quickly.

• Improper Temperature Settings: Setting the fridge too cold can cause excess condensation that freezes on surfaces.

How Frost Buildup Affects Your Fridge

Even a small amount of frost can lead to larger problems over time, such as:

• Uneven or insufficient cooling

• Frozen or spoiled food

• Overworked compressor

• Water puddles during defrost cycles

• Noisy operation due to frozen fans or airflow blockages

If you're constantly scraping away frost, it's time for a professional diagnosis.
